Artist I love – Alfred Stevens

Ever since I started studying art history, I have been so inspired by artists and their paintings. I have also gotten to know more artists, besides the ones everybody knows like Picasso or Rembrandt. I think art can do a lot when it comes to fashion. Art can inspire you to try a different look. That is why today I wanted to share with you some incredible inspirational paintings, made by an artist called Alfred Stevens.

Alfred Stevens was a Belgium painter, born in Brussels 11 in 1823. He lived most of is his life in Paris, where he passed away in 1906. Stevens break came at the Universal Exposition in 1855 in Paris, where he displayed six paintings. The themes and realistic approach of the paintings were very daring at that time, and the paintings were the talk of the town.

Stevens painted most of his paintings while living in Paris, which was the place to be at that time. Stevens maintained close friendships with other famous artists of his time, among them were Manet, Baudelaire and Morisot. He also maintained close friendships with well-know and powerful socialites, like Princess Mathilde Bonaparte. He often borrowed luxury dresses from his female friends, to use in his paintings.

Stevens was one of the few artists in his time, who made portraits of elegant women in specific. He portrayed them while they were doing things like reading, writing, walking around, looking in the mirror or taking a bath. No other painter that time portrayed women like Stevens did, displaying their own true emotions. When you look at a painting from Stevens, you see real women. In some way, I think Steven wanted to make women feel more empowered. My favorite painting of Stevens is the one you can see below. A woman, taking a bath while holding a rose. You can almost actually see her daydreaming about something, someone.
